The SAT Subject Test in Biology is broken into two different tests: E and M. E is for Ecological and M is for Molecular. One test is not necessarily more difficult than the other. However, based on considerable anecdotal feedback across a number of different sources, we've found that students consider the E curriculum to be easier. Although the exam questions for E are said to be harder, the opposite is true for the M test.   It's interesting to note that the statistics seem to belie informal accounts. M test takers score an average of 30+ points higher than E, with nearly 1/2 scoring above 650, as opposed to E where only 33% score above 650. It is likely that a disproportionate amount of brainer students elect to take the M test. Often times  anecdotal evidence, although significant in volume, ends up as highly bias when formal surveys are conducted.

Both tests share a core of 60 questions with a separate group of 20 E questions and 20 M questions. You elect which additional question booklet you want on the day of the test.

It is recommended that a student complete at least one year of algebra, and one year of honors or higher-level biology. Separate, targeted test prep in companion with or following a formal study program will earn the student his or her maximum score.
